The Iron Airman

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. — Leading the transformation of an Air Force base’s aerial refueling fleet often requires relentless stamina, mental fortitude, and disciplined execution.

For Lt. Col. Derek Patrick, 22nd Air Refueling Wing chief of staff and director of McConnell's KC-135 Stratotanker to KC-46A Pegasus conversion task force, those exact qualities were put to the ultimate test on Sept. 27 at Ironman Chattanooga 2026 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Competing in the Men’s 40–44 division under bib number 603, Patrick successfully crossed the finish line in 12 hours and 17 minutes after conquering one of the most grueling single-day endurance challenges in sports.

The Chattanooga course challenged athletes across three brutal legs: a 2.4-mile swim down the Tennessee River, a demanding 112-mile bicycle ride featuring 5,623 feet of elevation gain, and a 26.2-mile marathon run to the finish line.

“It was super hilly in Chattanooga,” Patrick said. “We did a little over a mile in elevation, and training here in Kansas, there's not many hills to train on, so that was really tough.”

Balancing the heavy logistics of transitioning McConnell’s legacy KC-135 operations to the modern KC-46 alongside months of high-intensity triathlon training, Patrick set a strong personal precedent for physical readiness.

“I've heard other people say that you don't really become an Ironman on the day you finish your first race,” Patrick said. “You do earn that title when you cross the finish line, but you truly become an Ironman during all that training that leads up to it.”

For his training, Patrick trained 10 to 15 hours each week for more than year to build the strength and endurance to complete the Ironman.

Patrick’s accomplishment comes at a time when Air Mobility Command and the broader Department of War are placing a renewed emphasis on physical standards, discipline, and combat effectiveness.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth recently underscored the vital role physical conditioning plays across the armed forces in an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show.

"It all starts with physical fitness,” Hegseth said. “To be an effective lethal fighting force, you must trust that the warrior alongside you in battle is capable, truly physically capable of doing what is necessary under fire."

For the Airmen and civilian personnel working under Patrick’s command on the KC-46 conversion, seeing their task force commander set the bar in physical capability reinforces the culture of excellence required for modern military operations.

“It helps make me a better leader because I'm setting an example and showing my teammates and other people around me that I can stay in shape, stay on top of my nutrition, my training and things like that,” Patrick said. “It also shows a good deal of discipline and perseverance, and that correlates to all aspects of life – whether it's military life or civilian life, or the day-to-day of being a dad or other roles.”

As McConnell Air Force Base continues to advance global reach and rapid mobility, Lt. Col. Patrick demonstrates that the determination required to complete an Ironman directly mirrors the drive needed to keep the nation's airpower ready for any mission.

“This was I big dream of mine, and also something I did for my kids,” Patrick said. “I wanted to set an example for them to demonstrate they can do big things when they show up; when they show up for themselves, when they have perseverance, when they're consistent. That is the same thing that I would hope other Airmen could take away from it – that they can have those big dreams, set big goals for themselves, and then go after and achieve them by being disciplined.”
